How we Remodeled Toyhauler Garage into Our Kids’ Bedroom

Remodeling Our Toyhauler Garage into the Kids Bedroom

When we first started full-time RV life, we didn’t realize how much the day-to-day layout would matter until we lived it. When we first started out, Rob built out Twin Bedboxes (pictured) that have been with us in each Toyhauler we have had (on the 3rd!) - you may not know this, but we were in an RV Accident with our first Toyhauler and it was eventually totaled. Then we moved into our first Brinkley (and yes there was a Fifthwheel Bunkhouse we bought inbetween thinking we might like the bunks, but ultimately decided there were too many perks to a Toyhauler as a fulltime RV Family that we really couldn't live without.)

The 2025 Brinkley Model G 3950 was a dream in so many ways, but over time we started feeling the friction of one specific pain point that affected our family constantly: the half bathroom setup. It’s one of those things that sounds manageable in theory… until you’re living with kids in it fulltime (especially daughters). If you want the full story on why we made the switch, I wrote it all out in a separate post (I’ll link it here), but the short version is that we needed a floorplan that supported our family better long-term — not just on paper, but in real life.

Once we moved into our 2026 Brinkley Model G 3970 toyhauler, we knew we wanted to make the garage space feel like an actual bedroom for the kids — not a garage that happens to have beds in it. This wasn’t just about making it “cute.” It was about making it comfortable, cozy, functional, and honestly… more like home. If you’ve ever stood in a toyhauler garage and felt like the room was almost there but not quite, you know what I mean. So we started tackling the biggest things that would instantly shift the feel of the space — starting from the ground up.

The first thing we fixed was the floor

One of the biggest issues in toyhauler garages is that the ramp and floor area can feel uneven or like a transition space rather than a real room. We wanted the floor to feel flush and natural — like you could walk through the space without that “garage slope” vibe. (And with the slope furniture tends to break faster on move day). So we had a guy build us a wedge for the ramp, and I cannot exaggerate how much that one change helped. It immediately made the room feel more finished, more stable, and more like a real extension of our home instead of a separate zone.

We learned how to lay laminate flooring (without being experts)

After the wedge was built, we were ready to change the flooring — because nothing says “still a garage” like the original toyhauler floor. This was one of those projects we wanted to do right, but also didn’t want to overcomplicate. We ended up getting help from our friends at RV Fix through Bish's RV, and it was seriously such a relief having a master tech walk us through the process step-by-step (in person)...Usually this is remote help-but since we were switching out our our Brinkley, they went above and beyond to help us out.

The laminate completely transformed the space. It brought warmth, texture, and a “home” feel that instantly made the whole room calmer. And honestly, it made everything else we added afterward look ten times more intentional.

We added something that made it feel like a real bedroom: family photos

Once the floor was done, the room still felt a little bare — like it needed personality. That’s when we ordered Mixtiles for the bedroom walls. I love Mixtiles because they’re such an easy way to make an RV feel personal without committing to anything permanent (and without dealing with heavy frames). For our kids, this was huge. Seeing family moments, memories, and familiar photos in their own space made the room feel more grounded — like, “this is ours,” not just a place we sleep.

The orange Wayfair couch was the moment everything changed

Then came the piece that pulled it all together — the couch. We ordered a brand new couch from Wayfair, and yes… it’s that gorgeous orange color. I wanted something that felt warm, stylish, and inviting, but also realistic for RV life and kids. This couch somehow checks all the boxes. It’s comfortable, it gives the room a finished look, with a pop of personality.

The second we put it in, the garage stopped feeling like a garage. It started feeling like a living room / bedroom hybrid that the kids actually wanted to hang out in and have their friends over!

The final touch was wallpaper under the beds

If you’re like me, you know it’s the details that make a space feel special. I wallpapered under the beds, and I’m so glad I did. It’s one of those “you might not notice it right away, but you feel it” design choices. It made the bed area feel like a cozy nook, almost like their own little built-in space — and it added texture without overwhelming the room. Oh and don't you LOVE this little hanging lamp!?

Wallpaper in an RV can feel intimidating, but doing it in that under-bed space was the perfect way to get the visual payoff without having to wallpaper the entire room.

What this remodel gave us that we didn’t expect

The biggest win wasn’t just how it looks — it’s how it functions. The kids have a space that feels like theirs. It feels more peaceful, more homey, and more practical. And for us as parents, it feels like we’re building a lifestyle that supports our family instead of constantly working around the rig. This remodel didn’t just change a room — it changed how our daily life feels inside the RV. The kids feel more confident to bring their friends over now, and we love that. They feel like they have a little oasis.
